History

Southern Way, a private entity, financed, designed and built the Peninsula Link freeway, which has now moved into the operations and maintenance phase of the contract.

Peninsula Link is provided toll-free as an Availability Public Private Partnership (PPP). Linking Melbourne Authority acted as the Project proponent on behalf of the Victorian government and oversaw the project development from initial concepts through to construction and operation, prior to its closure in 2015. VicRoads now represents the state of Victoria in the partnership.

Vision

Peninsula Link was designed and constructed as an open space corridor that announces the gateway to the Mornington Peninsula and meets the diverse needs of the adjacent community, road users and the natural environment.

Benefits of using Peninsula Link

  • Easing of traffic congestion on surrounding roads such as the Frankston Freeway and Moorooduc Highway
  • A 25 kilometre walking and cycling path starting in Patterson Lakes and connecting with other popular paths in the area
  • Contemporary design that considers motorists and the community, with particular care taken through sensitive areas like the Pines Flora and Fauna Reserve
  • More than 1.5 million plants, shrubs and trees will be planted along the freeway corridor to improve the environment
  • Peninsula Link enables motorists to travel from Melbourne's CBD to Rosebud without experiencing a traffic light
