407,000 tonnes of asphalt was laid by Abigroup and Boral during the construction of the freeway.
The Peninsula Link road surface is open graded asphalt, sometimes referred to as low noise pavement. This type of asphalt is the same surface material that was used on EastLink. It has four benefits:
1. Improves skid resistance, providing enhanced contact between the road and vehicle tyres
2. Considerably reduces spray in wet weather, improving driver visibility
3. Reduces the likelihood of vehicles aquaplaning, as water is able to pass through the open asphalt texture
4. Reduces road traffic noise by up to three decibels, compared with regular dense graded asphalt
